For fans of writing sci-fi and/or fantasy, this short story competition should very much appeal. It is very different to most writing competitions, so be sure to familiarise yourself with how it works on their website.
The main difference to your average competitions are that whenever you register, on 15th February you’ll be randomly assigned one of the two genres along with five prompts, of which you choose one to incorporate in your story. Then you have six days in which to write and edit your story… and then the fun begins!
There follows five rounds of judging. In each round, entrant will receive two stories from the genre they weren’t allocated (so if you got sci-fi, you’ll get stories to read from fantasy, and vice versa). You will then need to give feedback for each of the stories and pick your winner. The votes are totted up from the five rounds and the winner for each genre is announced on 18th March 2024.
One of the best things about this competition is that you will receive plenty of feedback on your entry from your peers which can be very useful even if you don’t end up winning the competition. Reading lots of other entries is also a fine way to pick out the things that work and don’t work in these genres.
So if you fancy getting involved in a writing competition with a difference, this could be the one for you.
