SUMMARY:Writing Peers Summer Short Story Competition
DESCRIPTION:Deadline: 21 June 2024\nEntry Fee: $14.99 per entry\nPrizes: $1\,000 ($500 for the winner of each genre)\nWord Limit: 2\,000 words\nJudge: Judged by fellow competition entrants\nThemes/Genres: Receive 5 writing prompts\, choose one and turn it into a story in an original and compelling way.\nCategory: Short Story Competitions\nCompetition Website: writingpeers.com/summer-short-story\n\nThe latest writing competition from Writing Peers is very different to most contests\, so be sure to familiarise yourself with how it works on their website. \nThe main difference to your average competitions are that whenever you register\, on 22nd June you’ll be randomly assigned a genres along with five prompts\, of which you choose one to incorporate in your story. Then you have six days in which to write and edit your story… and then the fun begins! \nThere follows five rounds of judging. In each round\, entrants will receive two stories from genres they weren’t allocated. You will then need to give feedback for each of the stories and pick your winner. The votes are totted up from the five rounds and the winner for each genre is announced on 30th July 2024. \nOne of the best things about this competition is that you will receive plenty of feedback on your entry from your peers which can be very useful even if you don’t end up winning the competition. Reading lots of other entries is also a fine way to pick out the things that work and don’t work in these genres. \nSo if you fancy getting involved in a writing competition with a difference\, this could be the one for you.

SUMMARY:Bridport Prize - Memoir Award
DESCRIPTION:Deadline: 23.59 (UK time) on 31 May 2024\nEntry Fee: £24 per entry\nPrizes: First prize: £1\,500; second prize: £750; three further prizes of £150; plus publication and manuscript/extract appraisal\nWord Limit: 8\,000 words max (5\,000 minimum) plus 300-word overview. (Title not included in the word count.)\nJudge: Kit de Waal\, award-winning and Booker-shortlisted writer of six novels\nCategory: Non-fiction Competitions\nCompetition Website: bridportprize.org.uk/the-competition/memoir-award/\n\nCompetition Details\nThe Bridport Memoir Award is for those who have a powerful\, interesting or entertaining story to tell about their own life. \nWhile the £1\,500 top prize is significantly less (and the £24 entry fee significantly more) than for the Short Story Prize\, the doors opened by a win or even a shortlist in the Peggy Chapman-Andrews makes it well worth entering. \nTo enter you need to submit an extract of between 5\,000 and 8\,000 words from the opening chapters of your memoir\, plus a 300-word overview. If you make it to the longlist\, you’ll then need to submit 15\,000 words (including your initial submission); then if you make the shortlist you’ll need to send in a total of 30\,000 words. So\, only enter if you have made significant progress with your memoir. \nThe judge for the memoir competition is Kit de Waal\, who has not only won the Bridport Prize for Flash Fiction twice in the past\, but has written a brilliant novel (My Name is Leon) and an outstanding memoir (Without Warning & Only Sometimes). \nAs well as the prizes mentioned above\, the top five entries will receive appraisal from The Literary Consultancy and the winner will also gain a consultation with literary agent A.M. Health and publisher Hachette\, which could prove invaluable (though there are no promises you’ll get a publishing deal out of it!).

SUMMARY:Prole Laureate Poetry Competition
DESCRIPTION:Deadline: 20 December 2023\nEntry Fee: £3 for one entry\, £2 for each any subsequent entries\nPrizes: 1st Place: £200; 2x runners-up prizes of £50 each; winners and runners-up will be published in Prole issue 35\nLine Limit: No limit\nCategory: Poetry Competitions\nCompetition Website: prolebooks.co.uk/competitions\n\nCompetition Details\nThe Prole Laureate Poetry Competition for 2024 is now open for entries. With no set theme and no limit to the number of lines in your poem\, this is a great opportunity for those poets who don’t enjoy trying to squeeze their creations into a mere 40 lines. \nAs the organisers say\, “We are\, as ever\, open regarding length\, style and content. We are looking for poetry that epitomises the editorial values of Prole: to make writing engaging\, accessible\, challenging and entertaining. Quality is all.” \nAs poetry competitions go\, the entry fee is very fair and with the winner and the runners-up having their entries published in the next issue of Prole\, this is a fantastic chance to get your work out into the world. The poetry competition is being judged by Maurice Devitt\, whose debut poetry collection ‘Growing Up in Colour’ was published by Doire Press in 2018\, and whose second collection ‘Some of These Stories are True’ came out in May 2023.
