With a prize fund of £1\,600 and the winners getting published on the website and in a future New Writers Anthology\, this is a great competition for new and experienced writers to get their work out there. \nNote that 10% of the proceeds from this competition will be donated to charity\, split between the excellent creative writing charity\, First Story and the Funzi and Bodo Trust. They both do brilliant work so even if you don’t win\, you’ll still be contributing to a good cause. \nLow Income Entries: We want to make the competition accessible to as many writers as possible. We have therefore funded a limited number of free entries for low-income writers. In addition\, there’s a £1\,500 prize draw that one lucky entrant will win\, irrespective of whether their entry wins a prize or makes the shortlist. \nThe competition will particularly suit those who are heartened by the generous word limit of 8\,000. DESCRIPTION:Deadline: 23.59 (UK time) on Wednesday 31st December 2025\nEntry Fee: £10 per entry\nPrizes: First prize:  £1000 + a Literary Critique; Second place: £300; Third place: £200\nWord Limit: First 5 pages of a novel and a 250-word synopsis\nJudges: BA Paris\, Sue Stephenson\, Melanie Whipman\, Guy Morpuss and Louise Morrish\nCategory: Novel Competitions\nCompetition Website: farnhamliteraryfestival.co.uk/literary-writing-competition\n\nFarnham’s First Five Pages writing competition is part of the annual Farnham Literary Festival which will take place from 5th – 15th March 2026.  \nEntrants are asked to submit the first 5 pages of their novel and a 250-word synopsis\, their work does not have to be finished. There is no set theme or style of writing however the entry should be an unpublished\, original story. The judges will agree on a longlist of 20 submissions and 10 will be shortlisted. The longlist announcement will be made on Monday 16th February 2026\, the shortlist announcement on Friday 27th February 2026 and the results on Sunday 15th March 2026. An award ceremony will be held on Sunday 15th March 2025 at Farnham Town Hall.  \nParticipants must be 18 and over\, an unpublished writer (self-published writers are eligible\, but the work itself must not be published anywhere). Only fiction work will be accepted and must be original. There are also three runners-up prizes of €1\,000 and eight prizes of €250 for commended poems.  \nThe competition is open to poems that have never been published\, self-published\, published online or broadcast. Unlike many poetry competitions\, there is no line limit\, and poems can be about any subject you like. \nThe judge for the competition is Ishion Hutchinson\, who is the author of three poetry collections\, is a recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature and the Windham-Campbell Prize for Poetry\, among others. He is Professor in the Humanities at Cornell University in New York and recently published his essay collection\, Fugitive Tilts\, which New York Magazine described as ‘thrilling’. \nThere’s no specific time given for the close of entries on 31 December 2025\, so don’t leave it until the last minute. The cost to enter is €16 per poem and you need to make the payment through PayPal.
