To get you in the mood for the New Writers Novel Prize 2026, our latest free-to-enter competition is seeking just the logline for your unpublished (and perhaps unwritten!) novel, novella or film script.
What is a logline?
In essence, a logline is a very brief summary that answers the question: “what is it about?” Consisting of one or two sentences, it is also known as the “elevator pitch”.
The idea of the logline is to pique the interest of potential readers, and the art is to summarise the premise of your book using very few words, ideally around 25 or 30 (but we’ll give you up to 50 words, to be nice!).

Logline Competition Details
This competition is FREE to enter, but entrants must sign up to our NewWriters.org.uk Newsletter, which is also free (use THIS LINK to sign up if you haven’t already).
Our monthly newsletter includes details of upcoming writing competitions (including our current Novel Prize with £1,000 going to the winner!), along with other writing news and special offers for writing-related products such as our favourite writing software. We don’t share subscribers’ information with anyone else.
Your logline of up to 50 words must be your original work and must relate to a novel/novella/film script that you have written or that you might write one day.
Please DO NOT write a logline for a book, film or TV series that already exists.
Also, DO NOT use AI or AI-powered software to help write your logline or come up with ideas. Your imagination is amazing, so please use that alone.
It is fine to send in a logline of a book you have not yet written (and it might prove an excellent starting point to get you writing a new novel).
Your entry title should be the name of your novel/novel/script (and not simply ‘Logline’). Save the file (PDF or Word doc) as that title, e.g. ‘The Wind Kicks Back.pdf’). Please don’t include your name on the entry. One entry per person.
