Competition Details
The Moth Nature Writing Prize is an international prize. It aims to encourage and celebrate the art of nature writing and is awarded annually to unpublished pieces of prose or poetry which best combine exceptional literary merit with an exploration of the writers’ relationship with the natural world.
The winners are chosen by a single judge each year, who reads the stories anonymously. This year’s judge is Sean Borodale, whose debut collection of poetry Bee Journal, a two-year poem journal of beekeeping, was shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize and Costa Book Award. He was selected as a Granta New Poet and a Poetry Book Society Next Generation Poet. His radio work, Mighty Beast, a documentary poem about a cattle market, won the Radio Academy Gold Award for Best Feature or Documentary.
His poem ‘Notes for an Atlas’, written while walking around London, was adapted and directed by Mark Rylance as an eight-night theatre work for Southbank Centre. He has been Honorary Research Fellow at the Slade School of Fine Art and is the current Adrian Brinkerhoff writer-in-residence at Poetry Ireland.
Previous judges include Richard Mabey, Helen Macdonald, Max Porter, Kathleen Jamie and Cal Flyn.
