The New Writers Flash Fiction Competition 2024 is seeking imaginative, thought-provoking flash fiction stories. With our biggest-ever prize fund of £1,600 and the winners getting published on the website and a future anthology, this is a great competition for new and experienced writers to get their work out there.
We’re delighted to welcome the celebrated author, playwright, columnist and illustrator Shreya Sen-Handley as the head judge for the competition. During her varied and brilliant career to date, Shreya has published three books with HarperCollins: the award-winning ‘Memoirs of My Body’ (2017), the acclaimed short story collection ‘Strange’ (2019), and the bestselling travelogue ‘Handle With Care’ (2022). Shreya is currently working on her fourth book, which is set to be published by Penguin in 2026.
Note that £1.00 from each entry will be donated to the excellent creative writing charity, First Story. They do brilliant work and run several projects to help empower young people and give them a creative voice). So even if you don’t win, you’ll still be contributing to a good cause.
Low Income Entries: We want to make the competition accessible to as many writers as possible. We have therefore funded a limited number of free entries for low-income writers. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis (though no later than 15th January 2025, one entry per person). Please see the terms and conditions for details.
